Citizens of Niger Republic residing in Kaduna State yesterday participated in their country’s 2016 presidential election.
Daily Trust gathered that about 674 Nigeriens were accredited to vote in Kaduna out of which 300 were rejected at their electoral commission for not fulfilling the requirements.
According to the Secretary-General of Nigerien community in Nigeria, Alhaji Sidi Ghabit Ahmed, voting began at 8am at the Sheikh Gumi L.E.A Primary School in Tudun Wada, Kaduna with 15 candidates contesting the country’s presidential seat.
“This is the first time we are voting outside our country after about 30 years. Voting outside Niger shows that our government have us in mind. For some years now, Nigeriens out of the country had been neglected and left out by government but the chance given to us to vote has given us a sense of belonging,” he said.
He commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nigeria for collaborating with the Niger Republic government to provide polling booths and materials for the exercise.
