The Nigerian Legion has empowered widows of fallen heroes with sewing and grinding machines in a bid to ameliorate their suffering. The legion also gave out various items to some aged members with a view to helping them with a means of livelihood.

Speaking at the occasion, the National Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Colonel M. Gayya (rtd), said as part of the legion’scorporate social responsibility, it decided to ameliorate the suffering of some widows and soldiers who had laid their lives for the country.

He said: “We are giving out 20 sewing machines and 10 grinding mills to 30 beneficiaries with the hope that it will make life a bit easier for them.

“The legion decided to support members through the funds raised by selling emblems and other items at the armed forces remembrance because we do not have support from the government; we are left on our own to take care of the families these fallen heroes have left; which is not right.”

He appealed to state governments to emulate what others were doing and place them on monthly salaries in order to reduce the suffering.

On his part, the state Chairman, John Tabat, called on the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the items received to better their lives. He also prayed that God granted the departed souls eternal rest.

He, however, appealed to individuals, organisations and all those that made pledges to the legion to redeem the pledges so that they could take care of the elderly and sickly members of the legion.
