Niger Delta Youth Coalition for Peace and Progress says it is angry with President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for keeping silent over alleged maltreatment of former President Goodluck Jonathan and his family.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the president of the coalition, Olayinka Teidor, said they were very pained that "the Niger Delta is still being marginalised."

He appealed to former leaders, Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar as well as Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to prevail on the Federal Government to "leave Jonathan and his family alone. We’re not happy.”

Teidor said the coalition also wanted all the items carted away from Jonathan’s Abuja house during a recent raid to be returned with immediate effect and those behind the raid publicly prosecuted.

He also urged Buhari to release the funds seized from Jonathan’s wife, Patience, as the continued seizure of the funds "is enough for her to develop health challenges."

According to him, Patience "is not the only former first lady, there’s obvious connivance in this administration. For God’s sake, she has not held any appointment. She was a former deputy governor’s wife, former acting governor’s wife, former governor’s wife, former vice president’s wife, former acting president’s wife and former president’s wife. She’s a grassroots person, she’s also a business woman.

"We’ve seen former first families opening universities here and outside this country. We’ve seen where former public officers are investing their loot outside this country. But this is a lady who is living here, she has not run away, providing jobs for people. This is the same person they’re subjecting to this kind of treatment and we feel pained and threatened.

"The Niger Delta is aggrieved and we are calling on the federal government to step into this matter and hands off all the properties belonging to the former first families and to protect their properties and business concerns. If they’re doing this to the most prominent person from the region, by extension, you’re doing it to the entire Niger Delta. We’re pained. We’e calling on the federal government to show restrain in their activities against the former first family, they should do the needful so that Nigerians will see that they are transparent, they are not selective."
