Minors can’t get national identification card – NIMC

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says minors cannot obtain the National Identification Cards (NIC) until they are 16 years of age.

Mr Loveday Ogbonna, the Head, Corporate Affairs of the commission, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja that they could only be issued with National Identification Number (NIN).

Ogbonna said that for any minor to be enrolled, he or she must be accompanied by his or her parent or guardian, who must have obtained NIC.

He said that any minor applying for the card must produce birth certificate, school admission letter or any other relevant school documents like the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) identity card.

“Relevant documents proving the minor’s identity should be provided by the parent or guardian at the enrolment centre.

“The applicant’s parent or guardian must also provide his or her initially issued NIC slip or verification,’’ Ogbonna said.

According to him, parent or guardian’s NIC must be correctly captured to avoid delay in the issuance of NIN to the minor applicant.

He explained that an enrolment form would be filled with the applicant’s required details.

“After successfully completing the enrolment form, the applicant’s demographic data will be captured,’’ Ogbonna said.

NAN recalls that registration of minors started in January.

The Nigeria Immigration Service recently said it will stop issuing international passport to persons that have no national identification by 2018
