A statement signed by the zone’s Information Officer, Yohanna Audu and made available to newsmen in Jos yesterday said the militia men who were armed to the teeth, attacked the NEMA officials who were on assessment tour of affected persons following the March 17 communal clash between the Fulani and the Eggon people in Nasarawa State.
“The clash which took place at Mada Station, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area left more than 2000 persons internally displaced and we were conducting an assessment of the affected persons in the area in order to provide relief materials when we were attacked,” the statement said.
Further describing the assault on the NEMA officials by the militia men, the statement said “some angry looking youths heavily armed with guns and cutlasses appeared from nowhere and asked us to come down from the vehicle. They said they did not want any Federal Government intervention; that they did not want to see NEMA nor any support from the agency. After hours of begging for our lives, the group who identified themselves as Mbatse militia group operating in the locality asked us to leave, but confiscated our official video camera.”
The statement said, however, that no member of the NEMA assessment team was injured.
