The community head of Dobi, Gwagwalada Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ismail Nda, said other communities should borrow a leaf from the method employed by the community in ensuring a cordial relationship between farmers and herders in the community.
The area council is notorious for such clashes with deaths recorded in some cases. But the community head said none of such was recorded in the community, attributing the success to the role played by the leaders. “The leaders are not careless,” he said.
Dobi, reputed to be the ward with the second highest polling unit in the area council, according to the chief, has been relatively calm and boosting its commercial activities.
The members of the community are not negligent of their duties also. “They know their work and the overall boss of the Fulani in the area is living close to the community. He comes around always to see the chief and ensure there is peace in the community.”
Nda said the efforts of the elders culminated in the peace enjoyed by all and sundry in the community and turned the community into the major producer of yam in the area council.
He added that the elders place emphasis on peaceful coexistence in order to fully benefit from the community.
“Majority of our people here are farmers, so if there is clash between farmers and herders, they would not be able to farm peacefully consequently telling on their purses and their family at the long run.”
He said the leaders used to hold peace and security meeting with all the major tribes in the community to boost the harmonious relationship.
“I will soon go to the market to share the notice for the next peace meeting to be held in Humi community,” Nda’s secretary said.
“We are living peacefully with Fulani here and I do not know if other areas are doing the same thing, but here our leaders are not careless,” he added.
