Celebrating Mawlid An-Nabi – is it Permissible?

Mawlid An-Nabi, the Prophet’s birthday, may Allah have send His peace and blessings upon him.. Some clarification.. How do you go about celebrating, if this is something to be celebrated?

When the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, he found the people of Madinah celebrating and playing in a state of joy on one particular day. He asked them, “What is this day?” They told him that this is a day that we used to celebrate long time ago, and we celebrate this annually. So the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) denied them from doing this and he told them, “We have only two feasts in Islam, the feast of Al-Fitr, and the feast of Al-Adha.”

It is not permissible to have an innovated celebration or feast, whether it’s celebrating the national day, mother’s day, labors’ day.. etc, it is not permissible in Islam.

Now going to Mawlid An-Nabi, the Prophet’s (Peace and blessings be upon him) birthday, if you want to analyze this to know if it’s a Sunnah or an innovation, first of all, people celebrate it on the 12th day of Rabi’ Al-Awwal, however, the authentic opinion of scholars is that the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) was born on the 9th of the third month of the Islamic calendar.

The consensus of all scholars that he died on the 12th of Rabi’ Al-Awwal or the third month of the Islamic calendar, which means when you claim to be celebrating the birth of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him), you are actually celebrating his death.

Second of all, you have to always have a pattern to follow, to know if this is a Sunnah or if it’s an innovation. Anything that draws you closer to Allah has to have evidence; you have to follow something, (i.e. the Quran, the Sunnah, the companions), in order for you to be on the safe side.

So, if you come to the Mawlid, the celebration of the birthday of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him), did the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) celebrate his own Mawlid? The answer would be no. The only indication, to his birthday was that he used to fast on Mondays. He never celebrated anything to do with the third month of the year, on the 12th that is.

And they asked him, “Why do you fast Mondays?” He told them, “This is the day I was born in, and this is the day that was revealed to me in”, Allah revealed the Quran on that day. So, if you wish to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him), fast every Monday.

The Prophet himself did not celebrate his birthday, nor did his companions, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and ‘Ali (May Allah be pleased with them all), and no one doubts that they loved the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) more than we do. The Prophet himself, did not celebrate the birthday of his grandfather Abraham, or Jesus, or Moses, or any of the Prophets of Allah, which indicates that it is a clear innovation.

So, whoever celebrates the birthday of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him), he either knows more than the Prophet; and this is blasphemous, because no one knows more than the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him); or he is claiming that the Prophet knew that it is good to celebrate but he did not inform his Ummah, and again he is accusing the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) of betraying the message and not delivering it all, and this is also a type of blasphemy.

In short, celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) is an innovation, something that was fabricated, not in the first 100 years, or the second, or the third. It was fabricated on the fourth century of Islam. So, no one of the scholars ever approved of it or agreed to it.

This is a form of an escape, because people who celebrate the birthday of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) claim that there is a Hadith, which is fabricated, it’s not authentic, they claim that the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever celebrates my birthday, then Allah will forgive his sins.” So, it’s like the Christians, they celebrate on Christmas, and do wrong things, then they claim that by their belief in Jesus Christ, this erases all their sins. In Islam, likewise, those innovators claim that no matter what you do, if you come on the day of the birthday of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him), you know.. cry a little bit, say some poetry and pretend that you are celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him), this shows your great love and hence, this will make all your sins forgiven. And this is completely wrong!

If you love the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him), you follow him in every single detail, otherwise, you are claiming something, and your actions are falsifying it.

Can We Celebrate The Birthday Of Prophet Muhammad (maulud Nabiyy)? by DEGENIUS2: 3:12pm On Feb 06, 2012

Can we Celebrate the Birthday of Prophet Muhammad?

There is nothing in the Qur’aan to say that we should celebrate the Mawlid or birthday of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). The Prophet himself (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not do this or command anyone to do it, either during his lifetime or after his death. Indeed, he told them not to exaggerate about him as the Christians had exaggerated about Jesus (upon whom be peace). He said: “Do not exaggerate about me as the Christians exaggerated about the son of Maryam. I am only a slave, so say, ‘The slave of Allaah and His Messenger.’” (Reported by al-Bukhaari). What has been reported is that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) made the day of his birth a day of worship, which is different to celebration. He was asked about fasting on Mondays, and he said: “That is the day on which I was born and the day on which I was entrusted with the Mission or when I was first given Revelation.” (Reported by Muslim, al-Nisaa’i and Abu Dawood).

Moreover, we know that the Sahaabah (may Allaah be pleased with them) were the people who loved the Prophet most. Was it reported that Abu Bakr, who was the closest of people to him and the one who loved him the most, celebrated the birthday of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)? Was it reported that ‘Umar, who ruled for twelve years, or ‘Uthmaan, did this? Was it reported that ‘Ali, his relative and foster son, did this? Was it reported that any of the Sahaabah did this? No, by Allaah! Is it because they were not aware of its importance, or did they not truly love the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)? No one would say such a thing except one who has gone astray and is leading others astray.

Did any of the imaams – Abu Haneefah, Maalik, al-Shaafi’i, Ahmad, al-Hasan al-Basri, Ibn Seereen – do this or command others to do it or say that it was good? By Allaah, no! It was not even mentioned during the first and best three centuries. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said in a saheeh hadeeth: “The best of mankind are my generation (or my century), then those who come after them, then those who come after them. Then there will come a people who will not care if their testimony comes before their oath or vice versa (i.e., they will not take such matter seriously).” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, Muslim and al-Tirmidhi). The celebration of the Prophet’s birthday appeared many centuries later, when many of the features of true religion had vanished and bid’ah had become widespread.

Thus this celebration became a sign of one’s love for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)? But can it be possible that the Sahaabah, the imaams and the people of the best three centuries were unaware of it, and it was only those who came later who were aware of its importance?! What the Qur’aan tells us is that love of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is demonstrated by following the guidance he brought. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Say (O Muhammad): ‘If you (really) love Allaah, then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Say: ‘Obey Allaah and the Messenger.’ But if they turn away, then Allaah does not like the disbelievers.” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:31-32]

The first aayah explains that love is just a claim, but the proof of sincerity is following what the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) brought. The second aayah reaffirms the importance and necessity of obeying Allaah and His Messenger. Hence Allaah ended the aayah with a very stern warning in which those who refuse to obey are described as kaafirs, and Allah does not love the disbelievers. We ask Allaah to keep us safe from that. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told us of the danger of not obeying him, and the danger of adding to what he brought. The celebration of Mawlid or his birthday is indeed an addition to what he brought – as all the scholars agree. He said: “The best of speech is the Book of Allaah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The most evil of things are those which are newly-invented (in religion), and every innovation is a going astray.” (Reported by Muslim and al-Nisaa’i).

We ask Allaah to protect us from bid’ah and to bless us by helping us to follow. Allaah knows best. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad.

The celebration of Al-Mawlid is a reprehensible Bid’ah and its celebrators have strayed away from the truth, because the religion of Allah is complete and perfect. Allah says that which translates as: “This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed my favour upon you and have approved for you Islam as a religion.” (Al-Maa’idah: 3).

Imaam Maalik, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: “What was considered at that time (i.e. the time of the Prophet sallAllahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and his companions) as a part of the religion is the religion, otherwise it is not a part of the religion.”

It is a historical fact that the Bid’ah of Al-Mawlid was initiated by Al-‘Ubaydiyyoon, who were the atheists that ruled the Faatimi state. This Bid’ah was definitely and undoubtedly not practiced by the distinguished first three generations of the Muslim nation, it is a new innovation and it is misguidance. The Prophet sallAllahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “Every Bid’ah (innovation) is misguidance” (Ahmad, Tirmidhi and others). All new innovation are rejected by Allah because the Prophet sallAllahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “He who does something which is not according to what we (i.e., the Prophet sallAllahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and his companions) are upon then it is rejected” (Muslim). Imaam An-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: “‘Rejected’ meaning false and not considered by Allah at all.” He also said: “This Hadeeth lays down one of the great fundamentals of Islam, which rejects and refutes any new innovation in Islam.” He further said: “This Hadeeth must be spread and used as a means to negate all new evils.”

Therefore, the Bid’ah of Al-Mawlid is misguidance which is rejected and has no significance to the religion of Islam.

-2down vote Here are the reasons, based on which this act and ANY act of birthday celebration is Haram:

• Innovation

Prophet Muhammad said: “Every bid’ah is a going astray and every going astray is in Hell-fire”.

As this act was not done by Prophet Muhammad himself, neither by any Sahaba, or taboyeen, or tabe-tabiyeen, so this act is considered as newly invented matter in islam (biddat), so its haram. (please note the word “EVERY”, which means there is nothing like good biddat, but every biddat leads to hell fire.. as some people believe that there is concept of GOOD biddat as well, there is not)

• Prophet Muhammad said “

“Whoever imitates a group, then he belongs to them.” Abu Dawood, narrated by Hadhrat Ibn Umar (R.A).

And birthday celebration started from kuffar, its origin lies with kuffar, its did not existed in muslim world before.

• As at the time of prophet Muhammad, NONE of the sahaba ever celebrated any act like that, so if someone wants to celebrate such Prophet Muhamm’s birthday, then he is trying to say thet he knows MORE than the Sahaba, and he loves Prophet Muhammad more than the Sahab, which doesnt makes any sense.

• Majority of scholars agree that it is Haram, based on Clear hadith and verses of Quran.

• You have doubt that it is not haram? or is it fine to celebrate? then BEWARE, see this hadith:

Prophet Muhammad said:

“The halal is clear and the haram is clear, and between them are matters unclear that are unknown to most people. Whoever is wary of these unclear matters has absolved his religion and honor. And whoever indulges in them has indulged in the haram. It is like a shepherd who herds his sheep too close to preserved sanctuary, and they will eventually graze in it. Every king has a sanctuary, and the sanctuary of Allah is what He has made haram. There lies within the body a piece of flesh. If it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupted, the whole body is corrupted. Verily this piece is the heart.” [Bukhari & Muslim]

So, based on this hadith, ONLY if you have doubt that its celebration is haram or not, then based on above hadith, Still you should avoid such act at all cost.

Rest, Allah knows the best

Is celebrating the “Mawlid day” Halal or Haram? [closed]

4 In my community, we used to celebrate the birth day of Mohammed (PBUH). In the past 30 or so years a lot of people start saying this is haram. Many people stopped doing it for many reasons but mainly not because they said it is haram but because the people who prohibit it are really bothering the people who do it. Like calling us “Mushrikin” or “Bid’ah”.

I can see why they prohibit it, because some people do something considered odd by most Muslims, Like dancing or singing.. But the Celebrations I am talking about are simple, No dancing or any stuff like that. We gather, we read Quran, say some stories about Mohammed (PBUH) and remind each other about his ethics (Akhlaq). One more thing to mention, this kind of Mawlids are celebrated in many random days in a year not only in the real birthday of the prophet. But the name is Mawlid still. I think we do it this way to avoid making that day so special. Many times we call it ‘Jalsat Zekr’ ???? ??? and not Mawlid.

My question: Is celebrating Mawlid the way I describe it Halal or Haram and why?

Is it reeeeeeeeeeeeeally true? Is there any way to make Truth questions constructive? – servant-of-Wiser Apr 10 at 14:49

This seems too vague to be answerable; as i see it, you want to know if the people who considered it haram would still consider it haram with the listed stipulations (which in and of itself would make it a fair fatwa-interpretation), but without knowing who these “many people” are or why they consider it haram in the first place, we really don’t have anything to extrapolate from. – goldPseudo? up vote11down vote Adding new ibadats to Islam is called bid’at, and it is haram. Then the question turns into Is there an ibadat in Islam for celebrating the birth day of the nabi?. The answer is no. There is no birthday celebration for the nabi in Islam. Nabi’s followers had never done any kind of celebration or birthday party for him when he was alive.

Birthday celebration for the nabi is definitely bid’at. Even those who intensely claim that it is not haram accept that it is a bid’at. But they say that it is a good kind of bid’at (bid’at-i hasene). Every bid’at is haram, there is no kind of “good bid’at”.

The nabi Muhammad was born in year 571. But, the first mawlid was celebrated in 1232 in Egypt. These celebrations are done mostly by mushriks of the type that are defined in Quran as the ones who are obedient to the pat which they find their fathers on. They defend themselves by saying “These celebrations are being done for centuries. Did all those people do wrong all those years? There were many scholars and omniscient among them. How do you know better than them?”.

??????? ????? ?????? ??????????? ????? ??? ??????? ?????? ??????? ?????????? ???????? ????????? ??? ????????? ???????? ???????? ???????? ????? ?????????? ??? ??????????? ??????? ????? ???????????

And when it is said to them, “Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,” they say, “Sufficient for us is that upon which we found our fathers.” Even though their fathers knew nothing, nor were they guided?

The number of people doing something can not be used to prove that that thing is rightful. There is no such celebrations in Islam. They are injected inside Islam many years after the death of the nabi. Christians celebrate birthday of a certain nabi, we Muslims don’t have such a sunnah (convention).
