Comrade Eugene Manji of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) has emerged chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Plateau State chapter in a keenly contested election.
The new chairman and other elected executives will run the affairs of the union for the next four years.
Manji scored 221 votes to defeat his closest rival Francis Izam of Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) who scored 151 votes, and Comrade Samson Lohnan who came third with 34 votes. A total of 407 votes were cast and one invalid vote recorded.
Announcing the results, Samson Chijioke, who conducted the delegate elections on behalf of the National Secretariat of the NLC affirmed that several of the outgoing officials were however returned unopposed for a second term in office.
In his acceptance speech, shortly after taking oath of office, the newly elected NLC chairman said he will run an all-inclusive administration during his tenure and called for prayers from members to enable the new executives succeed in their respective offices.
In his remarks, Governor Simon Lalong sued for peace and splendid working relationship with the union.
The governor spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Labour Matters, Comrade Jibrin Banchir, while declaring the delegates’ conference open.
Banchir was the immediate past Plateau State NLC chairman before he was recently appointed.
Commenting on the N30,000 new minimum wage, Lalong said he will work closely with the incoming NLC members to enable Plateau State government implement the N30,000 minimum wage.
