The minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has said that present happenings at the local government areas across the country can best be described as total collapsed system.
Ogbeh told journalists in Abuja at the weekend that local government system in Nigeria died over ten years ago, adding that governance at the local councils is not working.
He regretted that the local councils which are closest to the rural communities now live at the mercy of state governors.
He said “If the system of government that consumes 22 percent of our national income is a mere centre of waste, then it should be banned.”
Ogbeh observed that his local government in Benue State could not buy transformers or link rural communities with access roads.
He said absence of access roads in the communities nationwide was affecting movement of farm produce by the rural farmers.
Ogbeh observed that many state governments only pay lip services to the agric sector development.
