Residents of Katampe Extension, diplomatic enclave have called on the FCT minister to take immediate action to save the district from the illegal activities of land grabbers who have invaded the district.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, the President of the Katampe Extension Resident Association,  Alhaji Mohammed Gimba, said the illegal developers have invaded the district taking over all available green areas,  open spaces and buffer zones.

Their activities, he said, have greatly compromised the master plan of the district and made nonsense of the district as a low density diplomatic zone in the federal capital territory.

He said, “For several years now, we have been grappling with the activities of these illegal developers and land grabbers who are hell bent on destroying the serenity of the district for personal gain. All green areas and open spaces in the district have been carved up into plots with the connivance of some FCDA officials.

‘’As we speak, the district does not have a school, hospital, fire service or even a  police station. Areas designated for these facilities and services are under contention and many have been encroached upon. People are laying claims to the land, some have been illegally built up. The level of impunity is mind buggling!.

‘’We are making a passionate plea to the honorable minister to come to our aid. The district is designated as a diplomatic zone, it should be an example to other districts in Abuja. Unfortunately this is not the case. It is gradually become a commercial hub and a slum.’’

Also speaking, the Vice President of the Katampe Extension Residents Association, Dr. Austin Maho noted that the former FCT minister, Mohammed Bello, had visited the district in  September of 2021 and raised eyebrow over illegal development  in and around ECOWAS estate and subsequently  withdrew all building approvals in affected areas.
