The number of the dead has risen to 32, just as the critically injured victims of the Thursday night insurgency attack on a group of mourners in a Madagali village, Adamawa State, are struggling to pay for their treatment at a basic public hospital in Michika.  Daily Trust investigation revealed that five injured persons, including three girls and two men, are lying critically ill in the hospital and on their own, against a promise of financial assistance by the state government.
One of the hospitalized victims, Mathias Umoru  who had his leg amputated at the hospital as a result of severe bullet wounds, said his poor  family struggled to raise money for his treatment.
Mathias’s elder brother, Mathew Umoru told our correspondent that he had to pay N5000 after donating blood to his brother and another N15,000 for drugs.
Commenting on the number of the dead from the incident, Mathias said 32 persons were confirmed dead the following morning, most of them women and children.
“In the morning, we counted 24 dead bodies at the scene before discovering six more away from the scene. A man and his wife later died at the hospital, making a total of 32”, he said.
He called on federal and state governments to assist the injured with better medical treatment in more advanced hospitals to save their lives.
A 26-year-old female victim, Monday Anthony who sustained bullet wound in her buttocks, said her relatives found it difficult to raise enough money for prescribed drugs. “If my drugs finish, I am not sure my family can afford to buy more”, she said, calling on government to help her.
Monday narrated that she had to lie among corpses of three young girls after she was shot to escape the attackers who silently walked into Kuda village and fired at more than 30 unsuspecting mourners.
A legal practitioner and human rights activist from Madagali, Muhamýmad Ayuba, blamed the humanitarian problems in liberated communities on refusal by local government structure to return to the areas, saying the officials run government from Yola while the residents suffer.
The Commissioner of Information, Ahmad Sajoh said he was working with the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) to extend the necessary assistance to the victims.
When contacted, the Executive Secretary of ADSEMA, Haruna Furo said his team would visit the local hospital to assess the condition of the injured.
