The emir said this during the burning of illicit drugs worth N300m yesterday by the Kano State government.
“We have deposed a village head who was found consuming illicit drugs. We took the decision because as a traditional ruler, he should be a role model to others and not to be promoting ills in the society,” he said.
The emir, who did not disclose the name of the deposed village head, said he would not hesitate to relieve any tradition ruler or district head of his appointment, if found guilty of any criminal act.
“We are urging the state government to take similar measures against government officials who are in the habit of consuming drugs, because leaders are supposed to be role models and not the other way round,” he said.
Sanusi while lamenting the growing cases of divorce in the country, advocated the enactment of laws that would address the trend.
“We are advocating the enactment of laws that would protect the rights of women including right to education. We are in a situation where divorce cases have became so rampant that they are threatening family institution. Laws that would recommend stiffer penalty for anybody who divorces his wife without any genuine reason should be put in place,” he said.
He assured the Kano government of the emirate council’s support for its developmental initiatives.
Responding, Governor Rabiu Musa Kwan-kwaso commended the emir for his support and advice. He added that illicit drugs worth N4 billion have been destroyed since the inception of his administration in 2011.
“We are warning those that are bringing illicit drugs into our state to desist. Aside from burning of the drugs, anybody that is arrested in connection with the smuggling of drugs would be prosecuted accordingly,” he said.
