One of the patrons of the Kano polo club Engr Sani Umat has said this year’s tourney promises to be a top notch affair after yesterday’s entertaining matches saw teams like Triple K, Gas Agro emerge victorious on day one of the M.R.S Cup.
In a chat with Daily Trust, Umat gave kudos to the organisers for putting together an amazing spectacle so far which has attracted thousands from across the country for the two weeks affair at the Murtala Mohammed Polo Ground in Bompai.
“This is usually one of the most anticipated tournaments of the polo calendar every year and it isn’t any different this time around. It promises to be a huge coming together of the polo family and also massive competitions for trophies.” Umar said.
Veteran player Ali Hassan Hadejia also spoke with Daily Trust on the tourney said he’s looking forward to an exciting few days ahead and is expecting a tough battle for honours in this year’s tourney.
“The Kano event has always been a top drawer and hopefully this year will also be as exciting as the rest. I will be in Kano tomorrow (today) for the events.” Hadejia noted.
Over 20 teams from major polo clubs across the country will be jostling for the prestigious prizes such as The Emir of Kano Cup, Dantata Cup, Dangote Cup, MRS Cup, MTN Cup and the Muhammadu Sanusi Cup.
The Emir of Kano who led a host of top dignitaries to witness the entertaining final games of last year’s event is expected to repeat same this year.
The polo loving monarch attended the festival for the first time in his capacity as Grand Patron of Kano Polo Club and presented the Dantata and the Sir Muhammadu Sanusi trophies to the winners and runners up amid cheers and excitement from the players and spectators.
