Also among conclusions reached by Islamic scholars and imams drawn from six northern states that participated at a workshop organised by the Muslim Community Centre in Abuja, was that the use of soft approach such as dialogue could fast track restoration of peace and security in Northern Nigeria.
Their conclusions, contained in a 14-point communiqué endorsed by the workshop coordinator, Dr. Mohammed Gambo Hamza and made available to City News in Abuja, outlined measures in which peace can be restored in the North as well as the roles of Islamic scholars and imams.
While appreciating the efforts of the government agencies, Islamic organisations, and international organisations towards containing violence and other criminal activities in the northern states and the country at large, they noted that Islamic scholars and imams should sustain preaching for peace and security in the country.
“The young men and women involved in violence may not have proper parental care, were on drugs or at one time or the other were involved in political thuggery,” the communiqué reads in part.
The participants also urged Islamic scholars to be sufficiently informed on issues before holding discussion or expressing opinions, which from those with limited knowledge, could inflict more damage than the good intended.
The participants who spoke to our reporters at the end of the workshop, described it as apt to addressing the insecurity challenges in the North.
The 3-day workshop, which ended on Wednesday, featured paper presentations by seasoned Islamic scholars and an interaction between scholars towards fostering peace and security in Northern Nigeria which is witnessing insecurity challenges.
