Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero of Kaduna State had on May 6, 2014, signed into law the bill prohibiting motorcycle operations in parts of Kaduna, following its passage by the state House of Assembly.
Ali, in an interview told Daily Trust, said based on the security challenges facing Kaduna State, there is need for a drastic action.
He maintained that the ban had nothing to do with politics, saying it only seeks to reinforce regulations and regulate the activities of commercial motorcyclists.
According to him, what the successive governments should have done was to invest in human resource development by creating industries that will enhance production and creation of employment opportunities for the people.
“Most importantly, government should have invested more in power generation so that we will no longer be talking of generating set as the main source of power. The issue of employment cannot be a thing of the past if there is no stable power generation in the country. With epileptic power supply, unemployment will continue to skyrocket,” he said.
He added that tricycles will be given to only those who have been in the state for many years. “Those that came in from other states will not benefit because it will not be fair to deny the people from Kaduna and give strangers,” he said.
He added: “Some believe that the ban may encourage more atrocities including stealing and armed robbery, but I believe that criminals are not born, it is the society that made them so. The mere fact that government banned Achaba, does not suggest or encourage anybody to steal, except if he/ she has the intention to do so”.
