The police in Niger State yesterday confirmed the killing of a police inspector and a civilian in a robbery operation in Lapai town, Lapai Local Government Area of the state. 

Suspected armed robbers attacked branches of United Bank of Africa (UBA) and First Bank in the town at about 5:30pm on Wednesday. 

Witnesses said the robbers in their large number first attacked UBA along Suleja road beside Kobo Campus of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBB) before attacking First Bank along Minna road. 

They were said to have entered the town through Lapai-Gulu road in a convoy of two vehicles. 

The robbers were said to have carted away undisclosed sums of cash in Ghana-must-go bags through Lapai -Paiko road. 

Our correspondent learnt that those who sustained injuries during the operation were taken to hospital for medical attention. 

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 7, Saidu Abdullahi Fagge, who was in the town to assess the situation said the police inspector died while trying to prevent the robbers from entering the bank. 

He said the robbers shot the civilian in the head during the attack on UBA. 

He said the Inspector General of Police has directed the strengthening of security around banks in the state following the development.
