But it was gathered that the meeting was not unconnected with the call by the Kano State chapter of the Ohaneze Ndi’Igbo, which had asked the South-East governors to begin immediate evacuation from the troubled states. Rising from the prolonged crucial stakeholders’ meeting, Igbo leaders, elected public officers, political appointees, traditional rulers and religious leaders from the South East zone, declared their anger about the massacre of Igbo people residing in the northern part of Nigeria by the Islamic sect Boko Haram. But the leaders did not go beyond mere expression of anger and apparent condemnation of the spate of killings going on in the country, and resolved to set up a committee to monitor the development as it unfolds and advise on future actions.

In a three-paragraph communiqué issued after the closed door meeting the leaders said, “We assure our people living in the North and other parts of the country that we are in constant touch with the various state governments to ensure the security of their lives and property.” The statement was signed by Governor Peter Obi of Anambra state who doubles as Chairman, South East Governors Forum. The participants, however, commended the efforts of the Federal Government “in containing the situation.”

Leader of Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazurike, alongside former President General of apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, the Ohaneze Ndigbo, retired Justice Ezebuilo  Ozobu, told reporters that the  call became necessary since  the  situation is getting worse. They stressed that the number of innocent Igbo that are killed by Boko Haram are under-reported.

But reacting to the call for the return of the Igbo from the Northern states of the country, Governor Elechi described it as a call for the disintegration of Nigeria, pointing out that God created Nigerians to live anywhere in the country and not only in Igboland. He saw the call as “misguided.” “Not even in the most civilized economy of society do you have an environment totally free of crime but I want to remind you that the number of Ndi’Igbo, people of southeast who have died in the northern states are not as many as the number of Ebonyians who died in Ezillo. So, where do you run to that you will never have another crisis?”

But MASSOB leader, Uwazurike fired back, saying: “It is sacrilegious for some people to ask their kith and kin to stay put in the troubled North while their children are overseas enjoying themselves and they are at the Government House disbursing taxpayers’ money at their disposal.”
