The introduction was made under the ministry’s Sorghum transformation value chain programme.
Speaking during a field day at Imawa in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, the sorghum desk officer at federal ministry of agriculture Mr. Naphtali D. Telta stated that previously sorghum was not given attention like other crops, adding that it was in the year 2012 that sorghum got enrolled into the crop transformation value chain project.
According Telta, with the federal government intervention, hybrid seeds and fertiliser were distributed to sorghum farmers.
“With the federal government intervention on sorghum farming this year (2014), 220,000 sorghum farmers have benefited from the federal government intervention. And records have shown that since the inception of the intervention farmers have recorded an increase in yield at a rate of 20 bags per hectare as against 6 bags per hectare.”
Similarly, in his address, Nigeria’s country representative ICRISAT, Kano, Dr. Hakeem Ajeigbe, stated that the trial conducted by the institute of how to use sorghum to make poultry feed has resulted into the increase in weight of poultry.
He added that the rationale behind the research was to stop the practice of using only maize in making poultry feeds and start mixing it with 50% sorghum in order to create a market for sorghum farmers.
