The rainfall that lasted about 10hours in Kaduna on Sunday flooded some parts of Kawo in Kaduna North local government area of the state.

The flood caused heavy gridlock along Ali Akilu road by Kawo bridge for vehicles coming from the Zaria axis and those going to Mando area as the water took over part of the road.

Some motorists were trapped in the gridlock for over one hour.

DailyTrust observed that the cause of the flood may not be unconnected from lack of proper drainage system in the area.

Motorists who spoke to our reporter described the flood as a warning signal, calling on the state government to take the necessary actions that will prevent a re-occurrence in any part of the state.

Speaking at the scene of the flood, the general manager of Kaduna Environmental Protection Authority (KEPA), Alhaji Yusuf Rigasa described the pool of water as a flash flood, attributing it’s cause to indiscriminate dumping of refuse, which he said led to blockage of the water passage.

He however assured that necessary actions will be taken to address the situation and prevent a re-occurrence. "What we are experiencing is a flash flood as a result of heavy downpour which pushed the waste collection point and blocked the water passage."

While he appealed to residents and traders around the area to dispose their wastes properly inside the waste bins provided; he disclosed that one of the construction companies in the state will be engaged to get heavy water pumping machines to pump the water from the road to a proper channel and thereafter evacuate the waste that may have blocked the passage.

A quick response team of Zoom Lion Global Alliance, an environmental waste management company engaged by the state was also at the scene to salvage the situation.
