This might stun and amaze anyone. The wealthy Nigerian golfers who storm several golf resorts abroad might now have to shelve the idea since a resort that could hold its own against any posh resorts in the Algarves, Portugal, is presently operating in Nigeria.

The posh resort is the Porto Golf Resorts located in Minjabir, a village which is mere 38 kilometres outside Kano city.

The Porto Course has its fairways lined with trees, and a great view of a huge river that flows in silence could be accessed through about every hole of the course.

Even though golf is the game here, there are also an international standard Polo ground, Boating and Conference centres. Particularly, there is a 120 seater amphitheatre and the Club house is massive with a total view of the river that houses some five boats. Indeed, the clubhouse has a couple of bedrooms within. In all, you could count some 48 lush chalets with some Three Olympic size swimming pools surrounding them.

The course itself houses some posh nine holes of two par fives, four par fours and three par threes. The course is a constant hive of activity. Despite all these movement the atmosphere remain relaxed. The ‘putting Greens’ are fun to watch. They are lush and crisp. They are equally well manicured and large. The signature hole here, the 6th hole, is sheer dream. It’s a classy short par – 3 with a wide Green that is completely surrounded by water save for a tiny path that is the walk-way to the Green.

Just ahead of the course is another corridor… a huge ranch that contains over 500 cows. The milk from the cows is transformed into a quality Yoghurt product named Majestic. Right inside the course is also a bottle water factory and the water is equally known as Majestic water.

The joy of the vast complex is a package for the kids. This one houses all sorts of kids play things like you will see them at the Disney land. No wonder, on any weekend, over a thousand kids, mainly from nearby Kano enjoy picnics here in company of their parents. It’s just a thousand Naira per head that gets you into the facility.

The man who laid out the golf course and the Resident professional of the Kano Golf Club, Lawan Mallam, mentioned that it could still be a mystery how so much has been acquired in the complex within a short period of seven years. To make things run in the Club is a huge staff of some 120 workers, most of them from the Minjitbir village. And through considerate and constant training by Lawan Mallam, some of these workers can easily tend to Green like any ‘Greens man’ at the Augusta in Georgia.

“When the Patron of the Club told me he had a large farm he would want to convert into a golf course, I really got interested” Mallam who had featured in three British Open disclosed. “I thought it was just going to be a golf course but when I saw the plan I was amazed. I mean a golf course that could contain so many other features is just interesting. This is really one huge dream”.

Equally, the Resident Professional of the Club, Rabiu Suleiman, claimed that since most of the kids who come on picnic are getting interested in golf, an Academy could be on the way.

But who is the Patron of this vast project that is still ongoing? He is a sitting Senator of the Federal Republic, Senator Sabo Muhammed and hails from Jigawa State.

“Yes, I have this undying passion for golf. But I love the comfort of kids and I love polo as well. I just thought of how it would look if we could put a resort that could house all these things. And this is what we are doing. The project is ongoing, even though those who come here for the first time think everything is in place. But sure we are still working on some move great things. At the end of it all, we shall see what the who nation will be proud of. This is the dream”, he said.
