The Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, Senator Binta Masi Garba, has said the senate did not jettison the proposed gender equality bill but that there were areas that needed to be fine-tuned.
Garba said the bill would be fine-tuned in such a way it would not conflict with religious beliefs in the country.
She was speaking in Abuja at a workshop for the Development of Benchmark Minimum Academics Standards (BMAS) for Gender and Transformation Leadership (GLT) as a general study course for Nigerian universities.
She added that they had discussed giving  women equal inheritance right as enshrined in the Bible and Koran.
“We looked at gender parity instead of looking for equality which obviously, men are running away from,” she said.
Speaking on Gender and Transformation Leadership as a course for Nigerian universities, she said  universities shouldn’t have problem with the development of the benchmark for gender studies because parents had been encouraging their children to go to school irrespective of their gender.
