A 32-year-old petrol station attendant, identified as Sunday Ajewole, is being detained at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Lagos State Command for allegedly robbing a bank and a bureau de change.
The suspect, who is a member of a five-man armed robbery gang, was allegedly picked up from his hideout at Gowon Estate, Ipaja, by a team of policemen.
In his statement, the suspect confessed to have been a fuel station attendant before joining the gang.
He said, “I worked as a supplier of fuel. I was supplying kerosene and diesel. I am also a landlord in my area. I built my house about 10 years ago.
“I have been doing the supply work for about 10 years. It was one of my friends, called Omolaja who brought the guns to me. I am also a cultist of Aiye in the area. He said we should use it for land negotiators’ work. I am the third in command in the cult.
“I kept the gun in an uncompleted building beside my house. We are 15 members in the cult group. I joined the cult about four years ago. My wife does not know I am a cultist. I went into the gang because my job was not going on fine. It was one of my friends, Tunde, who brought me to the gang, and I was initiated.”
He further said, “I had a car, and I sold it about two years ago. It was a golf. I used the money I realized from our operations to open shop for my wife. I dropped out of school. I was a student of the College of Technology, Esa Oke, Osun State,” he claimed.
Meanwhile, a police source at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja, told Daily Trust that the gang is also responsible for the series of cars snatched within the metropolis.
The source alleged that the leader of the gang, who also doubled as their armourer was identified by another member of the gang who was arrested earlier for being involved in another robbery.
“Three members of the second gang were initially arrested following a tip-off at a hotel in Egbeda, Gowon Estate, Lagos,” the source said.
The immediate past Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Kenneth Nwosu, who confirmed the arrest, said that three vehicles were recovered from the gang’s hideout.
He further stated that the gang confessed to having three locally-made guns, however, only one was recovered from them during the raid of the hideout by the police.
