FOSLA Academy Karshi-Abuja yesterday defeated Junior Secondary school Yimi 2-0 to emerge winners of this year’s COPA Coca-Cola football tournament for secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory.

The opening goal of the match came in the first half through a well taken penalty by Habib Kazeem before Simon Zakari sealed victory for his school in the dying minutes of the highly entertaining finals.

To reach the finals, FOSLA Academy defeated Junior Secondary School Gwagwa 3-0 just as their opponents in the finals, JSS Yimi also defeated JSS Giri 3-0 in the other semi-final match.

By the victory, FOSLA Academy have picked the ticket to represent the FCT at the regional level of the youth football tournament which commences in June.

Speaking after the match Kazeem who emerged the highest goal scorer with eight goals expressed happiness with his team’s performance and assured that they will not rest on their oars but go for the trophy at the national level.

He said “I am very happy that we have again qualified to represent the FCT at the regional level from where we hope to reach the national finals.

“Last time we came third but this time I am confident that we would come back with the trophy. We missed it narrowly the other time but we are ready to do our best this time.”

Also speaking after the finals, the proprietor of FOSLA Academy and former president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi said he was satisfied with the performance of his boys.

He said the road to success in Nigerian football is through grassroots competitions like the COPA Coca-Cola tournament.

“This victory is quite unique. It is a strong indication that our collective desire since 2001 is being actualised within five to six years.

I want to give thanks to almighty God. I also want to appreciate the people of FCT because everybody here believes in this project and together we shall realise our dreams.

“The concept is to identify these boys at the grassroots. It is based on this that we are doing some of the things we have done. I am happy but I am not yet fully satisfied until these boys actualise our set objective,” he said.

Lulu also assured that the boys will be given all the necessary encouragement to compete at the regional and national stage of the competition.

A total of 120 secondary schools in the FCT participated in this year’s COPA Coca-Cola tournament.
