Speaking shortly before the commencement of the election, former president of the association, Abdullahi Adamu, who is also a serving senator representing Nasarawa North, said the association has witnessed several crises since inception in 1999.
Adamu stressed that despite the problems that bedeviled the association, they were able to bring together farmers from different parts of the country under one umbrella, noting that agriculture holds the key to the nation’s development.
The chairman of the electoral committee, Abubakar Aliyu, in an interview with journalists said the election was significant because according to him, since the amalgamation of Apex Framers’ Association and Practicing Farmers’ Association to produce All Farmers’ Association of Nigeria in 1999, there has not been an election.
He said with this election, the new officials will now have the authority to fine-tune the concerns of farmers nationwide.
The new President of AFAN, Architect Kabiru Ibrahim, said his topmost task is to resolve the crisis that rocks the association, adding that the association will have to keep doing things that will attract government to them.
“The association will give back the glory of agriculture to it; do things to help farmers who constitute about 70% of the population of Nigeria. Government will key in and policies will be determined by our actions.”
