Ex-vice chairman, supporters dump PDP for APC

A former vice chairman of Abaji Area Council, Alhaji Mohammed Nuhu Yakub, and a large number of members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have decamped to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the area.

Among notable defectors, said to be over 3000, were a former special adviser on women affairs to former a chairman of the council, Hajiya Laruba Loko, and a former PDP women leader of the South East ward, Hajiya Medina Mohammed.

The chairman of APC in the FCT, Alhaji Abdulmalik Usman, who received the decampees in company of representative of the FCT minister, Alhaji Abuzara Ribadu, at the council’s secretariat on Saturday, commended them for making a bold decision to pitch their tent with the ruling APC in the area.

He said the defection of the former vice chairman of the council and his loyalists was a clear indication that the party under the leadership of Alhaji Abdulrahman Hajiya, has been able to live up to the expectation of the people of the council in providing the dividends of democracy.

He said there was no doubt that the ruling APC, under the leadership President Muhammadu Buhari, has improved on various sectors of the economy and the fight against corruption.

He assured the new members of equal treatment.

The former vice chairman, Mohammed Nuhu Yakub, who spoke on behalf of other defectors, said his decision to join the APC with his loyalists was not to contest for any elective position, but to give their support to the incumbent chairman to sustain the ongoing peace in the area.

He urged the party leaders in the area to accept them with two hands so that they could work collectively for continuous peace and development in the council.

Also speaking, the council chairman, Alhaji Abdulrahman Ajiya, said he was overwhelmed by the defection of the former vice chairman and his numerous loyalists to the ruling APC and assured them that he would carry them along in all affairs of the council.
