Ex-convict, 23, bags another jail term for stealing

An Akure Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Oke-Eda, has sentenced a 23-year-old, Bidemi Olaleye, to one year in prison with hard labour for stealing.  

Bidemi said to have been arrested and jailed for similar offence not too long ago committed the offence at Oja-Oba, Adesida Market, Akure on March 11, 2017.

The convict who was dragged before magistrate A.M Fadoju, by men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corp had a one count charge of stealing against him.

The one-count charge read "the convict did commit a felony to wit stealing from one Olusola Precious a bag containing personal effects, mobile phone valued N5,500, wedding ring valued N20,000 and cash sum of N2,500 all valued N28,000.”

The prosecutor also told the court that the plaintiff came to their office to lodge a complaint of bag snatching, by unknown person on that fateful day.

According to him, during the cause of investigation they went to the scene searched the area and discovered the bag.

He further told the court that on March 21, 2017, the convict was arrested for another offence of bag snatching after his arrest; he was brought to NSCDC office where confessed to bag snatching  belonging to one  Precious.

He told the court that the convict snatched the bag and took N2,500, from it and threw the bag into the bush.

The convict, who was represented by Barr Olugbenga Adedugbe, however pleaded guilty to the charge.

Adedugbe however pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy since the convict had admitted to the offence.

In her ruling, magistrate, Fadoju sentenced the convict to a year imprisonment with hard labour but with an option of fine of N20, 000
