Galadimawa, who is the Head, Department of Environmental Management, Kaduna State University, made the call in an interview with newsmen.
She said indiscriminate use and disposal of polythene materials was causing serious environmental problems in the state.
“The uncontrolled use and dumping of polythene bags, most especially pure water sachet and polythene bags used for shopping, are harmful to the environment. Polythene bags even threaten the beauty of our state as government try to clean the environment but run short due to careless dumping of plastic bags,” she said.
Galadimawa particularly said plastic materials have negative impacts on the soil “because it is a non-biotic, non-degradable material that tampers with the soil and environment. When you farm in a field that has polythene bags, it will tamper with the growth of the seed,” she said.
The don, said it was important for the government to ensure safer ways to dispose of the material especially by establishing recycling plants.
She also spoke on indiscriminate burning of refuse in the state, saying it is detrimental to plants and human health.
“When you destroy vegetation, it has effect on the climate. Anywhere we have tree covers, refuse burning alters the climate confined to that particular area,’’ Galadimawa said.
According to her, Nigerians must stop refuse burning to reduce the impact of climate change and global warming.
Galadimawa said, “money can be made from waste while also creating employment by government opening recycling plants in the state instead of burning them.” (NAN)
