The Nigerian Legion in Yobe state, on Thursday, launched 2018 Emblem Appeal Week and realized over N20 million in the state

Yobe state governor, who hosted the event at the Government House Damaturu, made the highest donation of N12 million for the state and his personal donation of N1 million.

He said the annual event was organised to pay tribute to the contributions of Nigerian soldiers who fought in the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, and the ongoing war against Boko Haram.

"In the process, many paid the supreme sacrifice and never returned from the battle field, they left behind their loved ones, while others returned disabled.

"It therefore became imperative for us each year to reaffirm in this way our appreciation to the noble, courageous, and patriotic role played by the dead and living war veterans in times of need and remind ourselves the gratitude we owe them.

"We also appreciate the fact that some of them, particularly the disabled, by virtue of their position could not work and earn a living. It’s our responsibility therefore to assist and cater for some of their needs,” he said.

Earlier, the chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Yobe State wing, Captain Ladi Gadine (Rtd), said redeeming last year’s pledge brought in over N10 million, which was used in paying registration fees for their deceased members family especially those studying medicine and other health related courses.

He also appealed to the governor to allocate farmlands to them so as to be self-reliant and contribute to the state and country’s economy.
