Berkhout, who was speaking in Lagos while receiving the lifetime achievement award at the Silver bird Man of the Year Award ceremony, said Nigeria’s education system has been destroyed as many of the nation’s universities are just glorified local institutions.
“I am most concerned, like so many of us must be, about the decline in our education system. We used to be the best because our universities were truly universal. Universities anywhere in the world have international staff and students. Most of the PHD holders’ thesis’s we produce are not properly evaluated and therefore not acceptable internationally. In the 60s and 70s, Standard six was a qualification, school leavers were employable and teachers respected,” he said.
