Speaking at the stakeholders’ town hall meeting on TETFund intervention for the South-West zone, held at the University of Ibadan, Wike revealed that many tertiary institutions have not accessed such grants because of challenges of capacity in project implementation.
He said between 2010 and 2013, the Federal Government made available to states N125 billion as matching grant for the development of infrastructures and resources in basic education.
Wike said that government has supported states in the area of teacher training with each state receiving N170 million to enhance the professional development of teachers.
He pointed out that Federal Government has also provided interventions for successful implementation of the almajirai education programme, saying the programme was meant to address the challenge of the large number of out-of-school children.
He said, so far, a total of 125 day and boarding schools have been constructed across the federation under the programme.
Wike explained that, last year, Federal Government allocated the sum of N336bn to federal tertiary institutions in addition to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund complimentary support.
He also said the number of institutions funded by TETFund has increased from 164, last year, to 179, while intervention to polytechnics and colleges of education was increased to N443m and N390m as against the N240m and N190m for each institution.
