A former governor of Cross River State, Mr Donald Duke, has called for “staggering of elections.”

Mr Duke, who fielded questions from newsmen shortly after delivering a public lecture titled “Now Is Your Time, Use It” to mark the 4th Convocation Ceremony of the Godfrey Okoye University, Emene, Enugu at the weekend, said the method would improve the performance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He also said that it would enable the electorate to get more awareness and protect the electoral process.

He said staggering of elections would eliminate the fear of dominance by the ruling party which, he said, would be tested and checked every two years of conducting elections.

Duke, who explained that the electoral process failed in Nigeria due to lack of awareness among the electorate, called for the education of voters to allow them to gain experience.

Staggering of elections is a situation in which elections into various offices are conducted on different days, unlike the current practice in the country, where polls into different positions are held on the same day.
