Drug deal: Again, court denies Abba Kyari bail

A Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected an application by suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari, seeking to be released from jail on bail.

Justice Emeka Nwite held that Kyari had not given sufficient grounds for the application to be granted.

The judge said the detained police officer failed to raise new facts in his latest application after being denied the earlier bail request.

Kyari’s lawyer, Chuba Ikpeazu (SAN), had brought the application over alleged threats to his life at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Kuje, FCT.

The lawyer had argued that the application became necessary because Kyari and his colleagues contributed to the arrest and remand of many detainees in the centre in the course of their policing duties.

Kyari was remanded alongside ACP Sunday Ubua, ASP Bawa James, Inspectors Simon Agirigba, John Nuhu, ASP John Umoru, who is said to be at large, over drugs-related offences.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) also arraigned Chibunna Patrick Umeibe, and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne for the same offence. The two defendants were jailed after they pleaded guilty to the offences.

The trial has been fixed for October 19, 20 and 21.
