The Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) has adopted the presidential candidate of the leading opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) General Muhammadu Buhari as its candidate for the March 28 election.
This was the resolution of the party at its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Thursday in Abuja.
Reading the communiqué signed by the party’s outgoing national chairman retired General Bashir Salihu Magashi and acting national chairman, Chief Garshan Benson, Benson said the decision to adopt Buhari was unanimous considering that the PDP led government had ran out of ideas to address challenges facing the nation.
He said it was based on meticulous assessment of the state of the nation that the party had decided to adopt the APC presidential candidate considering that the DPP do not have a presidential candidate for the election.
“The NEC meeting held on March 19, 2015, at the party’s national headquarters, Abuja resolved to adopt General Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the APC as the DPP presidential candidate for the 2015 general elections.
“The resolution came through a motion moved by Mr. Danila Peter Asuno, chairman Edo State and seconded by Hon. Chima E. Nsirim, chairman Rivers State and there was no opposition. It is our view that the PDP as a party in power for 16 years has ran out of ideas on how to manage the current challenges facing the country, hence serious need for change of leadership,” he said.
When Daily Trust sought to know why the party had delayed until nine days to the polls, the party’s outgoing national chairman retired General Salihu Magashi who said he is bowing out of the position to carry out a rigorous campaign and support for Buhari said: “in politics, anything can happen within 24 hours let alone nine days. Twenty four hours can make a big deal. We have been talking with Buhari; we have been speaking with the APC.”
