Digital switchover: Jos TV viewers now enjoy free-to-air channels
From Hir Joseph, Jos
Television viewers in Jos, capital of Plateau State, will now be able to access 15 channels free of charge after the federal government weekend switched on the digital broadcasting services in a historic exit from analogue television.
As a pilot scheme designed to gradually meet a deadline of June 2017 when Nigerians will watch all of the channels available only through paid connection, Jos was chosen to commence the switchover expected to give access to viewers with set-top boxes.
The ceremony was done in Government House, Rayfield in the presence of Edward Amana, the Chairman of the Digital Transmission team, and Governor Simon Lalong who was represented by his deputy, Professor Sonni Tyoden.
Amana said that televisions needed set-top boxes to get the digital signals for their analogue television sets, and that the federal government was distributing 200 thousand set-top boxes free to households in Jos.
