This followed a claim by the organisation that its members remitted about $63.17 billion (about N10.35 trillion) into the country between 2011 and June 2014.
A statement jointly signed by Dr. George Manuwuike, NIDO Europe, Dr. B. Lee, NIDO Africa, Chief G. Okoye, NIDO Americas and Prof. E. Ejiogu, NIDO Asia, also said that the survivors would be assisted through facilitating access to proper medical and psychological treatment.
Dr. Manuwuike, who is NIDO’s board of trustees chairman, while speaking on behalf of the organisation, founded in 2000, yesterday in Abuja said the launch will be the cardinal objective of the NIDO Diaspora Day 2015 to be held from July 23 to July 27.
He explained that the fund will also be used to rebuild infrastructure in the insurgency-ravaged North-east region.
“We are involving international donors and other governmental and private organisations. So far, we have gotten encouraging responses. This year’s event will also be used to raise funds for the Diagnostic and Trauma Centre, a multi-million naira project that one of our continental NIDOs (NIDO Americas) is working in partnership with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) and other stakeholders,” he said.
He said within the first half of 2014 over $10.40 billion of the $21 billion reported for 2013 was remitted by Nigerians in Diaspora numbering over 20 million, adding that World Bank estimates put the remittances at over $40 billion annually if other non-reported channels of remitting money are considered.
Manuwuike added that a Diaspora Liaison Office (DLO) will be established in Abuja to serve as hospitality centre for returning Diaspora Nigerians to among others ease their re-integration into the Nigerian society.
