Device for tracking music on radio, TV introduced in Nigeria

The controversies concerning payment of the right royalties to music artistes shouldn’t occur anymore as Compliance & Content Monitoring Limited (CCM), has unveiled a music tracking service known as Musiktrak to provide superior media monitoring capability to music industry stakeholders.
“Amidst the controversies of royalties, we are compelled to introduce a third party report on how the broadcast stations use musical works. This should settle all forms of controversies and provide an accurate data to the artistes, the royalty collectors and the radio/TV stations. This is what happens in the advertising industry,” Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of CCM Limited, Mr. Tunde Onadele, said at the media launch in Lagos.
The device which is available on musiktrak.com  provides comprehensive and verifiable log of the airplay of songs by local and foreign artistes across 260 Radio and Television stations in Nigeria and is open for subscription to those who need the data.
With this solution, the Nigerian Copyright Commission, Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), the collecting marketing originations Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), and Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN) need to sit down and agree on the royalty rates.
He said Musiktrak is the first and only service that tracks song plays across Nigeria with 24/7 recording of free-to-air broadcast transmission from over 260 Radio and Television stations nationwide.
Onadele noted that “now that reliable data of song plays on radio and television stations in Nigeria is available, collective management organizations like COSON and MCSN have no excuse for not collecting royalties from broadcast organizations or paying same to right owners locally and abroad in a way that is fully transparent and accountable.” He opined that ‘”some of the disputes in the music industry can be averted and music makers, users, collection bodies and regulator can now focus to grow the industry”.
He said Musiktrak is the most advanced detection and logging technology that can be put to effective use by various music industry stakeholders in comparative airplays for planning competitive activities and obtaining hard data for making royalty/legal claims or forecasting upcoming royalty fees.
The technology also enables users to engage in trend setting by seeing the trends before they go mainstream, anticipate fashions and record hits and build or update music database for new ideas or access details on new titles (first play).
Musiktrak offering is presented in two comprehensive report packages – the musiktrak Report and the Musiktrak Chart- with graphs and charts and selections by song title, genre and broadcast station. The CCM CEO remarked that the three year project is now available for testing on the website while visitors to the website between now and February 28, 2015 will enjoy free reports for data generated between Sept 2013 and December 2014 only. Data reports from January 1, 2015 subscribed to will attract payment.
He said CCM is excited in offering Musiktrak as proof of concept that data of song plays on broadcast stations across Nigeria can be reliably provided to all stakeholders. “We are ready and willing to work with all stakeholders using song data to reward right owners – local and foreign artistes – in a responsible and sustainable manner.”
