The gunmen who were armed with pistols according to eyewitnesses tied up the cleric’s two watchmen after scaling the fence of the residence which is located at Yandutse Road in Nassarawa area of the metropolis, an opulent neighbourhood situated close to the government house.
The incident occurred at about 2:00am it was learnt.
It was gathered that the assailants then proceeded into Datti’s premises where they smashed a window and jumped into the house when they failed to gain access through any of the doors.
Datti who confirmed the incident to our reporter said he did not know why he was targeted but had informed security agents who he said would be in the best position to unravel the reason behind the attack.
The cleric also said the assailants were only interested in intimidating him, but that he would continue to pray.
One of Datti’s watchmen said the gunmen who faces were not covered stealthily jumped into the premises while they were sleeping and ordered them to show them the cleric’s room.
“When we told them we didn’t know where our master was, they tied us up with ropes, pointed a gun at our heads and threatened to kill us if we raised any alarm”, said the young security man who declined to be named for safety reason.
However, the spokesman of the Kano State Police Command, ASP Magaji Musa Majiya denied that the attack on Datti was an assassination attempt and instead blamed it on armed robbers.
“It was not an assassination attempt. Some armed robbers visited Datti’s house but they did not gain access into his compound because the police have responded promptly”, Majiya said, adding that there were no injuries or deaths during the attack.
Datti, a renowned Islamic scholar and medical practitioner was involved in efforts to mediate between the federal government and the Boko Haram sect but backed out.
