The president of Institutes of Directors (IoD), Chief Mrs. Eniola Fadayomi stated this during her visit to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in Lagos.According to her, there is need for operators in the capital market to comply with corporate governance principle in the market to enhance accountability and facilitate market growth.
“We are here to collaborate with the management of NSE on how to further send out this message on corporate governance for investors both foreign and local to have trust and confidence in the market,” she said.
She noted that the institute is partnering with the NSE to strengthen the level of corporate governance in the market to make it more credible and attract the needed investment to grow the economy.
She said IoD partnered the exchange because they are dealing with companies run by directors who are institute members. She lauded the management of the NSE for enforcing strict compliance of corporate governance in the market.
Fadayomi stressed that the institute’s primary concern is to develop directors. “These directors are the drivers of the various corporate organisations which you are representing on the trading floor. At the peak of these organisations are the corporate companies which are listed here, on the exchange,” she said.
She commended the management of the exchange for enforcing the principles of corporate governance in moving the exchange forward, stressing that as a result of their efforts people now see the stock exchange “as a credible institution in which they can put their hands in their pockets and put money into.”
The chief executive officer of the exchange, Mr Oscar Onyema, who said the NSE and IoD already had a memorandum of understanding to further corporate governance, explained that in the course of the visit both organisations held discussion to strengthen the collaboration.
