President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, (COREN) Engr. Kashim Ali has said 90 percent of collapse buildings in the country are handled by non – engineers.
Kashim who said this yesterday in Abuja while answering questions from journalists during a press briefing also blamed the incessant building collapse on lack of political will on the part of the government to punish the owner of collapse buildings that engaged non engineering professionals.
“Building collapse is criminal offence but government does nothing about it because the owners of such buildings who hired quacks are untouchable. Any building that collapse is a lost to the economy because it could have contributed to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country,” he said.
He said COREN always investigate members of the council who handle collapse building, adding that whoever that was found wanting has been prosecuted. He said the council had set up a committee which monitored building construction in the country.
