A security source who spoke to Daily Trust said, “Fifteen gunmen stormed a bank in Alkaleri in the night and opened fire on security operatives there and they responded. The gunmen entered the bank but before they could break the vault, reinforcement came and chased them away. The robbers were unable to steal a kobo from the bank.”
The source added that during the exchange of fire, an Inspector of police was killed and one of the robbers was also killed. He added that another member of the gang was captured alive, and that he took security men to their hide out where they recovered five Ak 47 riffles, eight magazines, two IEDs, a forged police identity card and two GSM handsets.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Hassan Mohammed Auyo, said a press statement would be issued on the matter, but was yet to do so at press time.
