The objectives of the partnership between the Federal Government, the United Nations Environmental Programme and Ogoniland must not be allowed to fail, the chairman of the Nkire Political Advisory, Chief Sam Nkire, said in Abuja yesterday.
He said it would be a waste of time, money and human resource if the youth of the area continued to destroy the ecosystem by blowing up oil pipelines which not only increases the level of pollution but the period of remediation and restoration of the environment.
Chief Nkire, who spent part of his early childhood in Ogoniland, said people in rural Niger Delta villages in the late 1950s and early 1960s had better control of their lives than what it is today.
He said President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to implement the clean-up of the polluted region of the Niger Delta would be his second best achievement after his defeat of Boko Haram.
He added that the Buhari administration had shown that it meant well for the people of the Niger Delta, following the inauguration of the Governing Council of the Trust Fund for the Hydrocarbons Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) for the implementation of the United Nations Environmental Report (UNDP) on Ogoniland.
