Alhaji Aliyu Abare, Secretary of the association, made the call in an interview with journalists in Gombe. He said the government had promised to construct the dams, adding that this is the right time for the construction, before the rain stabilises.
“We are appealing because this is the right time for these earth dams to be constructed, especially in the grazing reserve areas, because if the rainy season commences, the dams will retain water. Actually, they promised to rehabilitate some of the dilapidated ones and construct new ones,” he said.
According to him, water is the problem of pastoralists and if constructed, the dams will equally serve as reservoirs.
Abare said most of the dams are in bad conditions and need to be reconstructed and rehabilitated.
He said the association had made effort in sensitizing the pastoralists to embark on communal effort to reactivate some of the dams, adding that government needs to reactivate them.
Abare also called on the members to ensure peaceful coexistence in their areas and the state in general and to report any suspicious movement of persons and goods to security agencies.
