Cars as a fashion statement

My good friend, Nkereuwem Ebong, says some people believe that “if you own a car, you are doing well”. The type of car you use comes to insinuate another thought about how much you are worthy.  It is this notion that makes a lot of individuals skeptical about revealing what they have or displaying them without revealing who owns it.

But Nse Ema in Akwa-Ibom State says the type of cars people drive do not show wealth of the society. “For instance, it is hard to find someone who will purchase the most premium vehicle pleasing to the eyes. It is either a Toyota or one of the Korean cars,” Ema adds.

This prompts Sunday Trust’s investigation in Akwa- Ibom State. While it is possible to see about 10 people driving Bentley sedan, it is, however, hard to see one Cruiser over the new tarmac constructed in the state.

Mboti Etuk notes that in Lagos “some individuals still purchase a high end S-class that can only cover 50 kilometers and then trade it for less than half of the price for the latest version. Yet, he is not ready to drive or display it in a museum”.

Because of this, people like Nse Ema who is also a car enthusiast says he is willing to acquire and repair a 1959 S-class sedan if he can get it. This explains the point that people purchase vehicles for different reasons.
