The Director-General of the National Bio-safety Management Agency (NBMA), Dr. Rufus Ebegba, has debunked allegations made by some anti-Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) groups that due process was not followed in the signing of the bio-safety bill into law.
Ebegba spoke during a series of sensitisation seminars on GMOs and agricultural biotechnology organised for stakeholders by the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Nigeria (OFAB), National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) and Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.
He said: “Due process was followed in passing and signing the bio-safety bill into law. It was not signed on Sunday, in a hurry, and no permit was granted Monsato Nigeria Limited to poison people with GMOs, as alleged by some people.”
Commenting on the bio-safety bill, Dr. Rose Gidado, Country Coordinator, OFAB, maintained that the bill was a product of years of painstaking efforts by all stakeholders and “not an overnight remedy”.
