The Benue State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has commenced political dialogue for candidates in the state vying for various elective positions in the forthcoming general election.

State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Comrade Joseph Shimaor, while declaring the event opened at the NUJ House in Makurdi, lamented that Nigeria was currently on a difficult journey of its nationhood.

Shimaor said it was worrisome that in every electioneering year, the country always seemed to be on warpath stressing that it ought not to be so.

The commissioner, therefore, urged journalists as bridge builders between government and the governed to execute their constitutional duties by highlighting the agenda of the different political parties for the electorate to make the right choice.

Meanwhile, a candidate vying for a seat to represent Makurdi South in the State House of Assembly under the  Labour Party, Comrade Kris Atsaka, has decried how the legislative arm of government had become a rubber stamp to the executive arm over the years.

Atsaka, an ex-chairman of the Benue NUJ, who was the first to speak at the occasion, said there was a deficit in governance especially in areas of roads, health care and water supply in the state.

He called for the revision of existing laws as well as strengthening procedures for the implementation of such laws.

He further pledged to raise a motion to tackle flooding in his constituency when voted into office and to legislate on tax regime to promote mass investment and realisation of the full potentials of the business class, artisans and general commercial activities of the state.
