The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP) ‎chapter has given a seven day ultimatum to the Bauchi state government to address the issue of salary cuts or its members will embark on a strike.

This was contained in a communique issued at the end of an emergency meeting held by the union over the issue.

According to the communique signed by the Polytechnic’s ASUP chairman,Comrade Bala Mohammed Yakubu stated that members of the union had sacrifice a lot due to the economic down‎turn in the country.

"Now that ‎the country gets out of recession, and the federal government gave a time frame for the implementation of new minimum wage, the union never postulate a deduction in salary from the government but rather an increments through the implementation of lower cadre migration and other allowances that are not fully implemented as done in other Tertiary Institutions of learning," it stated.

The union therefore stated that it wanted ‎to remind the state Head of Civil Service that Polytechnic’s salaries structure is statutory in nature which became a national policy.

According to the union, states must also comply with the policy as stipulated in the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) Scheme of Service/‎Guidelines as approved by the previous administration.

"The union also wants to remind the State Head ‎of Civil Service that, there are no illegal allowances in Tatari Ali Polytechnic, as the institution has different Scheme of Services compared to other state ministries and agencies of government," it stated.

The communique further noted that, it was baffled by the deductions in its members salaries without a circular intimating them about the development prior to its implementation.

"Therefore, the union vehemently and resolutely reject the deduction and demands an immediate restoration of the monies ‎deducted from our members May 2018 and the immediate payment of salaries to our members who are yet to receive their salaries,"the union added.

It also demanded the full impl‎ementation of CONPCASS salary structure and Lower Cadre  Migration before the expiration of the seven days ultimatum or its members will embark on industrial action.

The union however ‎commended Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar’s for prompt payment of workers salaries and called on him to relieve the State Head of Civil Service of his duty over his alleged failure and sabotage of the governor’s efforts.

It could be recalled that the issue of cuts in Bauchi State workers May salary has generated a lot of tension in the state.

Many workers had their salaries reduced significantly. In some cases, it was reportedly up to 50 per cent‎ while some are yet to receive theirs.

The Bauchi State Head of Civil Service, Alhaji Liman Bello had however said that the deductions ‎were effected on salaries but on Jumbo allowances awarded to some workers by the previous administration.

He directed that, workers with complaints should forward them to his office ‎in order to be rectified.
