ALGON National Secretary Alhaji Shittu Yakmut, said yesterday in Abuja that the recent stance of the Senate on the autonomy for the councils shows that the National Assembly is listening to the yearning of the people and that Nigerians should be weary of moves that may impede the council’s realisation of the autonomy.
“It is good that the much needed development in the country would now be achieved through the autonomy for the third tier of government. We all know that the development of any nation starts from the grassroots and the independence of the councils will make this easier,” Yakmut said.
He said the 15th national convention of the association slated for November 11 and 12 in Abuja will among others witness the emergence of new national officers of the association and that the earlier date fixed was shifted due to the Hajj pilgrimage as many members of the association were in Saudi Arabia for the exercise.
Chairman of the planning committee of the convention, Dr. Emmanuel D. Loman, in an earlier statement had said that the anniversary is titled “Effective local government administration as a solution to combating myriads of national challenges.”
