President of the chamber, Otunba Femi Deru, said at 15-years, the productive part of the life of the vehicles would have been spent.

He said the rate of breakdown of such vehicles is high just as the risks of accidents are heightened.

Deru who spoke at a press conference in Lagos, implored the federal government to intensify moves against the use of right hand driven vehicles which he said had been outlawed since April 1, 1972.

According to him, right hand driven vehicles are being freely imported and driven on Nigerian roads.

‘’Recognizing the danger to life as a result of accidents caused by vehicles driven by drivers not in the right position in the car, we expect that such cars should be impounded and their importer/owners dealt with legally’’.

He also advised that the National Automative Fund (NAC) should be channeled to upgrading dealer workshops in addition to financing customers for purchase of vehicles.

This way, the benefits of the fund will be optimal and fair, he said. “The case of importation and sales of fake spare parts has reached an alarming rate. This is putting the lives of many motorists at risk. It has been estimated that fake parts contribute 66% of road accidents in Nigeria. We implore the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) to step up surveillance in this regard”.
