Appointments and Buhari’s 2019 forecast

The speech by President Muhammadu Buhari at the APC NEC meeting yesterday, was a short but powerful message to both those who are happy with the party and the aggrieved ones, such as those who felt forgotten or not adequately compensated after the 2015 general elections.

Buhari said sometimes it is easier to manage failure than to manage success, “and a big success such as that we have achieved.”

The president actually touched on critical points for many members of the party, not only leaders and chieftains present at the event,  but long forgotten fellowship  across Nigeria, who the train failed to carry along after the elections.

Ex-presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, late Umaru Yar’adua and Goodluck Jonathan did same by creating elaborate space to accommodate their supporters, if not for anything, to reduce agitation and have upper hand during election.

So strong were PDP governors in 2003 that Obasanjo attempted to make members of boards and parastatals as delegates for the party’s conventions, all in an effort to checkmate the powers of the governors who had control over delegates from their state.

Though Obasanjo could not succeed in sneaking such members into the boards, he was able to have a field day while his second tenure lasted.

There was serious revolt in the last couple of months, with authorities in the APC saying they were either side-lined, or those that matter have allowed PDP members to have a field day, hence, making the vehicle heavily overloaded to move to anywhere.

It’s now over two years into the mandate given to the APC-led administration and nobody should expect to be reminded that 2019 is around the corner.

Aware that things are  not normal, Buhari told the NEC members, “Some of us in this meeting may know I had given instructions since October 2015 for this exercise to start.

“But there have been inordinate delays through several committees in an attempt to get the balance right and to make sure all parts of the country are equitably represented,” he said.

Our correspondent recalled that the task was initially given to the sacked SGF Engr. David Babachir Lawal, but was later retrieved midway and handed over to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, owing to  alleged manipulations and financially induced nomination of prospective appointees at the detriment of real APC members.

Thousands of party faithful have been waiting to take over board membership and executive positions from reluctant PDP members, who held sway in over 100 federal government agencies and parastatals all this while.

Undoubtedly, occupying such positions by party members, which may likely go to over 5000 people, coupled with the benefits that come with it, would be to the advantage of incumbents that might likely go for a second term.

Evidently, yesterday’s meeting attest to the fact that Buhari is fully aware; through his countenance and his speech that was laced with democratic tone,  that democracy is a game of number and Buhari realized that his touring influence of 2015 needs more than personal integrity and credentials.
