Leaders and elders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the southern senatorial districts of the Cross River State have insisted that the next governor of the state should emerge from their district.

The stakeholders, who met in Calabar, resolved that they would take active part in the 2019 governorship election by fielding their own candidate.

They insisted that they can no longer be zoned out.

Elder David Okon, who spoke on behalf of other stakeholders and leaders of the district, said since the chairmanship of the party was zoned to the central with federal appointments’ favour, it was only natural for the south to produce the governor instead of the north.

Okon said, “More so, the southern senatorial district has more numbers of local government areas than others, as well as higher voting strength being over 50% of the entire voting strength of the state, which puts them in a better position to secure victory for the APC.

“I hereby move that the southern senatorial districts should produce the next governor of the state come 2019 elections and our people in the south should hold onto that common goal. I strongly move that timeously, we must produce APC governorship candidate from the south.”

The elders charged themselves to initiate processes and subsequent meetings that would lead to the emergence of a single governorship aspirant from those that had so far shown interest in the southern senatorial district.
